Purpose
To define
the terms under which eligible employees may earn compensatory
time.
Eligibility
All salaried
Non-Exempt Staff are eligible to earn compensatory time.
Rate of
Accrual
Non-Exempt, salaried
employees will be compensated for hours worked in excess of the
normal work week with accrued compensatory time. Compensatory time
will accrue on an hour-for-hour basis for hours worked in excess of
the thirty-five (35) hour work week, up to and including forty
(40) hours. Compensatory time will accrue at the rate of one
and one half times the number of hours worked in excess of forty (40) hours
per week or eight (8) hours per day.
Maximum
Accrual
In accordance with Fair
Labor Standard Act regulations, employees may not accrue Compensatory
Time in excess of 240 hours. Employees who have accrued the maximum
amount of Compensatory Time allowed must take time off in lieu of
earning Compensatory Time. Such time off must be taken within the pay
period in which the excess hours worked occurred.
Overtime
Payment
Salaried employees,
whether exempt or non-exempt, are not eligible for overtime pay.
In certain exceptional circumstances, when approved by the President,
overtime may be paid in lieu of compensatory time to eligible employees.
These exceptions must be requested by the Department Head and
approved by the Component Head and the Human Resources Manager.
Hourly Employees
Hourly employees are
not eligible for compensatory time, and will be compensated for
hours worked in excess of the normal work week with overtime
payment. This does not apply to compensatory time granted when officially
recognized University holidays fall on the employee's day off.
Exempt Employees
In very unusual
circumstances, the President may authorize paid overtime
or accrual of compensatory time to exempt employees.
