The University of the Virgin Islands is a Historically Black publicly supported land-grant institution. UVI is seeking faculty who will ensure that students meet high academic standards in a nurturing and learner-centered environment in keeping with our HBCU status and with interests, experience and expertise in curriculum innovation, interdisciplinary studies and distance education, as well as teaching and scholarly excellence in their specialties. In addition, academic programs support our land grant designation by integrating instruction with research and community service. Appointees must be able to work productively with students and colleagues of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds; serve on the University’s committees; and contribute to the development of the University’s Vision 2012.

 

The Science and Mathematics Division is seeking candidates for a tenure track position who will teach a minimum of 24 credit hours per academic year at the undergraduate level in the following position:

 

Assistant or Associate Professor of Computer Science: Applicants should have a Doctorate in  Computer Science, computer engineering, or related field; and have demonstrated excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level. An emerging Research and Technology Park will offer opportunities for partnerships in research.  The ability to work with people of diverse cultural and educational backgrounds is an important asset.  The successful candidate should be comfortable  teaching upper level courses in the Baccalaureate program.  All junior and senior courses in this program are taught using Video-conferencing facilities on both the St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses.  Experience in distant learning and teaching web-based courses is desirable as our freshman and sophomore level courses are taught in ADL mode.  Additional expectations of all faculty include participation in University committees and continued professional achievement.  For more information regarding this program, please visit our site at http://faculty.uvi.edu/csc/CSCPages/

 

Employment will begin on August 13, 2008.

 

Rank and compensation will be based on academic preparation, teaching and practical experience. Benefits include a generous TIAA/CREFF or Virgin Islands Government Retirement Plan, as well as a comprehensive group medical and dental insurance plan.

 

If applicable, economy airfare to St. Croix for the appointee and immediate family, and shipping allowance of up to $1,250 will be paid by the University upon presentation of receipts.  We are seeking candidates who would find living on a tropical island an advantage in addition to the professional opportunities.  St. Croix offers excellent diving sites, great golf facilities, and good sailing.
