Annual Leave and Sick Leave are accrued. Upon
completion of one calendar month of employment, full-time regular employees are eligible
to earn both annual and sick leave, and faculty members are eligible to earn sick leave
only. No leave shall accrue for partial months worked at the beginning or termination of
employment.
Sick Leave
Executive, Administrative/Managerial,
Research Faculty and Professional Staff accrue paid sick leave at the rate of 8.75 hours
per month, for a total of 15 days per year. Regular full-time staff accrue sick leave at
different rates depending on the number of hours in their regular workweek, as follows:
35-hour work
week
*8.75 hours per month
15 days p/yr. |
40-hour work
week
*10 hours per month
15 days p/yr. |
Teaching Faculty accrue sick
leave at the rate of 8.4 hours per month for the ten month academic year, totaling 12
working days per academic year.
Annual Leave
Executive, Administrative/Managerial,
Research Faculty and Professional Staff accrue paid annual leave at the rate of 12.25
hours per month, a total of 21 working days per year.
Regular full-time staff accrue paid Annual
Leave at rates based on their length of service and number of hours in a regular work
week, on the following schedule:
35-hour work week:
3 years = 8.75 hrs/mth. (15 days/yr.)
3+years = 12.25 hrs/mth. (21 days/yr.).
40-hour work week:
0-3 years = 10 hrs./mth. (15 days/yr.)
3+years = 14 hrs./mth. (21 days/yr.)
New non-contract employees may not take
Annual Leave until they have successfully completed their probationary period. Employees
may carry over a maximum of 80 days of Annual Leave from one fiscal year to the next.
Leave accrued in excess of this must be used by the end of the current fiscal year or be
forfeited.
Annual Leave must be requested and approved
in advance except in emergencies. The amount of advance notice varies with departmental
needs. Department Heads should set reasonable guidelines and convey them to all staff.
Department Heads may require employees to be present during periods of peak activity and
may require documentation from employees to substantiate leave taken without advance
notice because of emergencies. An employee who takes Annual Leave without obtaining
advance approval may have the absence charged to Leave without Pay.
Bereavement Leave
All regular employees are entitled to five
days of leave for funeral purposes upon the death of an immediate family member, defined
as a spouse, parent, child or stepchild; or three days of leave upon the death of a
sibling. Bereavement Leave may be charged to accrued Sick Leave, Annual Leave,
Compensatory Leave or Leave Without Pay.
Compensatory Leave
Non-exempt regular salaried employees are
eligible to earn Compensatory Leave. Those working a 35 hour week accumulate one hour of
compensatory time for the first hour worked over 7 in any one day, and for every hour
worked over 35, up to 40, in any week. Those working more than 8 hours in any one day or
more than 40 hours in any week accumulate compensatory time at the rate of one and
one-half times for the excess hours worked.
Employees may accrue up to 240 hours of
compensatory time (see Compensatory Time, page 24). It must be used in lieu of Annual
Leave. Compensatory Leave must be requested and approved in advance except in emergencies,
subject to the same terms and conditions as Annual Leave.
Family Medical Leave
The University recognizes that family issues may have a
substantial impact on workers well being and ability to perform on the job. From
time to time it may be necessary to take time from work to care for family members with
serious medical conditions, or for personal medical reasons. Therefore, to address these
concerns, and to comply with the Family Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA), eligible
employees may take up to twelve (12) weeks of leave for the employees own serious
illness, the birth or adoption of a child, or the care of a seriously ill child, spouse or
parent. To be eligible, an employee must have worked at least 1,250 hours during the
12-month period preceding the leave request and must have been continuously employed by
the University for at least 12 months.
